Lair of the Leviathan may well be the smallest scoped chapter so far, but is highly focused and downright entertaining from beginning to end. The first two episodes felt like Monkey Island on the surface, but were lacking in key areas.

The Trial and Execution of Guybrush Threepwood features a few of its own surprises, which I’ll definitely spoil in the following few paragraphs, if you’re reading this far I guess I’m assuming you’ve either already played the season or don’t care about spoilers at this point.įinally, a hilarious, superbly written, well-rounded entry into Tales of Monkey Island. Breaking out the island hopping into their own chapter has always fit well with Monkey Island, and allows the writers to create more natural cliffhangers and mini-conclusions. So far I’ve really been enjoying Tales of Monkey Island, it isn’t as good as the first three games in the series, but is really well done as an episodic adventure.
Thankfully, The Trial and Execution of Guybrush Threepwood manages to sustain most of the momentum of Leviathan in a well written romp that sets out a few pretty unique puzzles for our hero.

Let’s talk first about the episode, and then the series as a whole.Īfter the excellent Lair of the Leviathan episode, I was totally expecting the quality to fall in back to Tales of Monkey Island’s previous levels, good comedy, but not Monkey Island comedy. Rise of the Pirate God serves as not only the finale for the season, but once again, could be the final chapter in Monkey Island’s 20 year history. I know that TellTale Games has had great success with season gaming, but would it work with Monkey Island? Would the episodes be too long? Too short? Too reliant on cliffhangers? Could a writing staff still capture Guybrush, Elaine, and Chuck?įive episodes later, I have my definitive answer to all of these questions. I certainly had my doubts, I had never played an episodic game before Tales of Monkey Island, so even the delivery method was questionable. There were a lot of questions whether Guybrush Threepwood is even funny in three dimensions as it had been tried and failed once already. Not only is the series one of those coveted, highly nostalgialized, fan favorites from our youth, but the last game, Escape from Monkey Island, simply wasn’t that good. If you only owned the iPad versions, well you’ll have to rebuy these ones if you want them.As the first Monkey Island game in nine years, fans had high expectations for Tales of Monkey Island.
#MONKEY ISLAND TELLTALE UPDATE#
The previously iPhone-only releases, which are now Universal with iPad support, are the ones that have been brought back by LCG Entertainment this week, and if you owned those you’ll be able to update to these newest versions for free. If you owned the original iPad-only “HD" versions of any of the episodes, those are still lost to the aether. That makes these re-releases a bit tricky. It’s an absolutely excellent time, and starting in late 2010 the Tales of Monkey Island games began making their way to the iPad, with separate iPhone versions following in the years after. It again follows the continuing adventures of Guybrush Threepwood and retains the essence of the classic ’90s-era Monkey Island games while bringing the whole presentation into the modern era.
#MONKEY ISLAND TELLTALE PC#
Tales of Monkey Island was a joint project between Telltale and LucasArts that originally released for PC and the Nintendo Wii way back in 2009. Their latest resurrection is bringing back the entire 5 episode Tales of Monkey Island series to iOS. Over the last year and a half or so LCG Entertainment has slowly but surely been fulfilling those promises, bringing back games like Batman, The Wolf Among Us, and Puzzle Agent.
A little less than a year after Telltale folded, a group called LCG Entertainment was able to secure many of the previous Telltale IPs and projects and announced that they’d resurrect the Telltale Games name with the intention of re-publishing the games that they had the rights for on the various gaming marketplaces, as well as releasing new projects including the long-awaited sequel The Wolf Among Us 2 and completing the final season of The Walking Dead. The answer was that, well, they simply disappeared. It was a sad time when Telltale Games went bust towards the end of 2018, and that immediately called into question what the fate of their many published games would be.
